Adult Hebrew Classes are held on Sundays and follow the Religious School calendar. Classes are open to all adults of high school age and above, regardless of previous education or religious affiliation.
Adult Hebrew Level I: 9:00 AM - 10:30 AM Adult Hebrew Level II: 9:00 AM - 10:30 AM Adult Hebrew Level III: 10:30 AM - 12:30 PM One of the purposes of the three Adult Hebrew classes offered at Beth Chaverim is for helping members to acquire the skills with which to be able to recite the prayers in the New Union Prayer Books. Another reason for holding these continuing Adult Hebrew classes is to provide the adult members of our congregation with an opportunity to acquire an understanding of the language in which the Torah is written, and thus be able to interpret the foundational scriptures on Judaism for themselves.
As Rabbi Joseph Telushkin noted in his book Jewish Literacy, "The Hebrew Bible has been the most influential book in human history." ... the Torah is the first recorded document to contain the hypothesis that the primary cosmic world creations were the work of an Almighty or Ever-existing Creative Mental Power. What intuition or exceptional insight! These first five books of the Tanach also represent the first written account of a human being undergoing an in-depth interaction with the inner divine spiritual presence (YHVH).

Adult Basic Judaism Classes are held on every other Sunday from 10:30 until 12:30, alternating with Rabbi Israel Zoberman's Adult Growth Session open forums, and follow the Religious School calendar.
This adult class does not presume any knowledge of Judaism, but any knowledge is welcome. It doesn’t matter if you need to brush up on all you may have forgotten, or if you have never received a grounding in Judaism at all, or if you are the non-Jewish part of a blended family and want to understand our faith, you are welcome. We discuss biblical stories, the meanings of the holidays, rituals, history and traditions. We have lively discussions and exchange a wide range of experiences. We alternate Holiday/Historical/Ritual discussions with Bible discussions, but digress as new topics come up. Previous topics have included Genesis through Isaac, The Sabbath, The High Holy days, and The Maccabean Dynasty through the Destruction of the Great Temple.

Tot Shabbat is very special and is held on the second Saturday of each month at 11 am. It begins in the Sanctuary with a Shabbat service lead by the Rabbi, geared specifically for the little ones. The children sing, they “wake” up the Torahs, they talk to the Torahs, and they participate in the service on the Bimah like little adults. After the service, they all excitedly head for the kindergarten classroom where their Jewish education continues with refreshments and crafts. The refreshments, usually consisting of juice boxes and cookies symbolizing the wine and challah), begin with the traditional blessings over the wine and bread. After they have finished; the hands, minds, and creative hearts join in a Jewish lesson by crafting different articles relating to the current holiday or the Torah portion of the week.
Although by definition, Tot Shabbat was designed for Pre-K and younger children, we would love to have all ages attend and join in the fun. The more youngsters participating, the more fun we will have, the more we will grow, the more we can do, and the more they will learn and grow. This Shabbat service is a very important part of our children’s Jewish education as it speaks to them on their level, and provides a fun and creative spark for their little minds. Just ask anyone who has attended.
Join us for the next Tot Shabbat - see the calendar for details!
