Congregation Beth Chaverim History:
Beth Chaverim started in 1982 with 5 area families; the Levy Family, the Meyer Family, the Feldman Family, the Bass Family, and the Nudleman Family. The Congregation’s first Rabbi, Rabbi Barbara Goldman-Wartell met with the families in each other's homes until they started meeting in local churches.
Rabbi Israel Zoberman helped the congregation grow through the next few decades. During this time, the congregation built a synagogue on Stoneshore Road which was our home until 2018. In 2019, the congregation then moved to our new home at Temple Emanuel at the beach.
We continue to meet each Friday for services in their social hall and broadcast on Zoom. This pluralistic friendship has led to monthly joint services, that reflect the values of both congregations. Once a month, we have a service and a dinner - short worship followed by dinner and drinks at a local restaurant. We gather for Purim parties, Passover Seders, Hanukkah parties, book clubs, and social action events. Many of our Congregants meet for a variety of activities throughout the week.
We remain a close-knit community where people can come as they are, and a community that values life-long learning, innovative approaches to Jewish spirituality, creativity, and Tikkun Olam – healing the world. That’s what draws people to us from diverse Jewish backgrounds - Conservative, Reform, and non-affiliated. As we continue beyond our 40th year we think back to our accomplishments and who was there to help us, parents, family, friends, our community and look forward to a bright future.
